And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!”
Your youth can become the driving force behind your church’s outreach ministry and spread the Gospel throughout your community.
But how will they preach unless they are sent?
God will stir a desire in their hearts to share their faith after they’ve had a real encounter with the Spirit, but who will nurture this flame into a full-blown wildfire?
You, the youth leader. You, the parent. You, the lead pastor. Every adult mentor in the life of your church’s youth should be focused on guiding the next generation to evangelism.
Here are some effective ways to impart a passion for outreach to the youth of your congregation:
Practice What You Preach
There is something extremely powerful about a living, breathing example. Are you taking the time to talk about your faith with the people God puts in your path? Don’t expect your youth to take the initiative for outreach if they don’t see their leaders and parents doing the same. Jesus came to seek and save the lost, and every Christian should follow His example. Your youth should look to Jesus, but remember that they’re looking to you as well.
God loves the youth of your church without question. It doesn’t matter how they act or what they do or don’t do. Their grades, their popularity, their performance – none of it amounts to anything in the eyes of God. God loves all, and loves all equally.
As a youth leader or parent, do you? Do you actively exemplify Christ-like love to your youth? Do you love the way you want your youth to love others?
Make Youth Gatherings About Evangelism
Part of your church’s youth ministry should involve mentoring and teaching. The youth need to study the Bible, ask questions and worship. This is part of how they grow in their faith. But one of the commands of Jesus is to go and preach the Gospel! Don’t make all youth activities about entertainment. Make the focus evangelism! Whether you take to the streets or you organize an outreach event, make sure that most of the time your youth are gathered, they’re gathered in order to spread the Word!
Give Them Clear Action Steps
Don’t send them out into the world blindly – teach your youth what you’ve learned through your own evangelism. Help them memorize Scripture. Share common questions and help them practice telling their own story.
Preach the Power of Prayer
Pray all the time. Teach your youth to pray all the time. When prayer is the first priority of your outreach ministry, God will guide the way.
But the Lord said to me:
“Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’
For you shall go to all to whom I send you,
And whatever I command you, you shall speak.
Do not be afraid of their faces,
For I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord.
Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me:
“Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.”
