Effective Church Leaders Have These 4 Qualities in Common

You don’t have to embody charisma. You don’t need an outgoing personality. You don’t have to change your look. You don’t need to read every leadership book on the shelves. What do you have to do to lead your church effectively?

Every pastor has their moments of doubt. Am I fit for this calling? Is this God’s purpose for me? Am I making a difference for the kingdom?

If you’re asking these questions, it shows you care. It shows you want what’s best for the people you serve. It shows you want to use your life for God’s greater purpose.

When you face opposition, fear or doubt, start praying. Specifically, ask God to help you exhibit the following four qualities of effective church leaders, both when times are easy and especially when your church faces challenges:

1. They Live with Joy

Do people want to follow a pastor who’s bored, sad or down? Effective church leaders have excited, joyful followers. If you aren’t joyous about your mission, why should the people you’re trying to lead choose joy either?

“In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul.” – Psalm 94:19

2. They Act with Loyalty

Loyalty is a commitment. It shows you are dedicated to others and you’re going to stick by your people no matter what. Loyalty means when you’re needed, you’re there. You’re not just talk – you sacrifice too. There’s no room for gossip. You’re fully focused on your mission to train and equip your flock. Most of all, you’re loyal to God and His word.

“Holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.” – Titus 1:9

3. They Love People

Maybe you’re drained after a day full of interacting with people or maybe it’s what keeps you going! Whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you love people. Truly loving people means you’re concerned for their physical health and spiritual health – you’re their friend through every season of life. You want what’s best for them and you see them as God sees them.

“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love.” – Ephesians 4:1-2

4. They Accept Guidance with Humility

Effective church leaders accept accountability with gratefulness. They don’t look for positive reinforcement for every decision. While they are empowered to lead, they surround themselves with trustworthy advisors who are willing to offer sound counsel. They are open to learning. They are not proud. They have a servant’s spirit with no arrogant thoughts.

“Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established.” – Proverbs 15:22

Serving with God at the Head

Joy. Love. Loyalty. Humility. With God at the head of your church leadership team, you follow His example, setting the course for the rest of your congregation to strive for these qualities as well. What other features of Godly leadership have you found effective in your journey?
